OK…so realistically most kids (especially the younger ones) will be completely happy playing in the sand and beach for days but if you’re looking for a wider variety of activities on Kauai for kids and families, I’ve put together a list of some wonderful ones – certified by our friends with kids.
Tropical Mini Golf
I don’t think you’re ever too old for mini golf (or putt putt as my relatives in Oklahoma would say). Kauai Miniature golf has an 18 hole course that tells of Polynesian history and native plants (which you can see in the landscaping) so you can learn as you navigate the tricky course . They also have a snack and gift shop for a pre or post game snack and shopping.
Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens
The two hour family tour at Na Aina Kai Gardens will tke you through lagoons, mazes and to a magical Children’s sculpture garden. At the children’s garden, there’s a small pond, a Navajo village, a treehouse and fun play areas with tunnels, bridges and slides. This is a hidden gem on Kauai! Many of the locals don’t even know about it.
Kauai Escape Room
If you haven’t played an escape game, you’re missing out. Time to remedy it by challenging yourself and your family at the Kauai Escape Room. While younger kids can have fun scavenging, the game is best for kids twelve and up. They’ll be able to actively find clues and solve challenges and see if they can unlock they mysteries of the room in under an hour.
I recommend booking a few day in advance and checking the website for the games and success rates. The games are challenging! This is the perfect thing to do when it rains on Kauai, for evenings, days when you don’t want any more sun and for airport days as they’re about ten minutes from the airport.
The playground is right across from one of our favorite beaches for kids on Kauai and is built by the community. A fun fact is that I actually volunteered in creating this when I was in middle school (it’s been awhile!).
You’ll find swings, a volcano slide, swinging bridges and other play structures as well as all types of secret pathways and hiding spots. When my brother was growing up, this was his FAVORITE playground! He spent hours playing hide and seek with friends. It’s an amazing spot. It’s also decorated by beautiful mosaics that the community created.
**There’s also the bridge playground that is really close and built in a similar manner. Check out our free guide of Things to Do on Kauai with Kids to see all of our favorite spots on a map.
Kilohana Train Ride
Jump onto the open air Plantation Railways mahogany train for a forty minute leisurely ride through Kilohana Plantations. You’ll learn about the plantation history of Kilohana, see fruit trees, and pineapples.
My absolute favorite part of the train ride is feeding the animals. The train will stop and they’ll give you food to give to pigs and goats. It’s so much fun! They have tours hourly from 10am until 2pm, but you might want to reserve ahead just to make sure you get a spot.
Kauai Humane Society Doggie Field Trip
This is a fun one! The Kauai Humane Society has a program for guests to take one of their dogs out on a field trip. Pick up your dog within the hours specified on their website, give a donation of at least $25 and you’re set to go! They’ll give you a list of dog-friendly locations and the dogs come in an adorable adopt me vest. Your kids will LOVE this if they like dogs.
Beaches with Lifeguards that are Great for Kids
My two favorite beaches on Kauai for kids are Lydgate and Poipu Beach Park. They both have lifeguards, protected swimming areas and playgrounds as well as bathroom facilities and picnic areas. While there are many amazing beaches, these just feel a little safer due to their protected nature.

Kids Clubs at Kauai Resorts
A few of the higher end resorts on Kauai offer kids clubs to keep your child entertained while you have some relaxation time (and maybe a tropical drink – you deserve it.)
From 9am to 4pm, the Westin Family Kids Club has an exciting, activity-filled program for kids ages 5-12. This for a fee program highlights Hawaiian Culture and traditions so your kids will leave with a broader cultural understanding of Hawaii. You should reserve in advance for this service. They also offer a parent’s date night option.
Grand Hyatt Kauai
Similar to the Westin, Camp Hyatt offers cultural and recreational activities for kids 3-12 from 9am to 4pm for a fee. They might learn hula, watch a movie, make a shell bracelet and even play in the pool. If your timing is really good (usually Christmas time) they might even get visited by a mermaid – it’s the coolest thing ever!
Advance reservations are requested and children must be toilet-trained.
